PostSubject: Red and Bridget: Preserving the Clans   Wed Aug 07 2013, 00:46

It had struck Red as rather odd when he could hear his clan. Well, sometimes he could anyway, like as soon as he went anywhere near the forest, or even stepped foot in St. Patrick's Day Town and their thoughts filled his head-- or at least their emotions. Nothing definite, just feelings, the occasional word, usually just instinct to help, stay or flee, if it was extremely important, maybe a segment of a memory. It was just how the pack communicated since speech was difficult in their wolf forms.

This, though. This was a first. He heard them now, in the school. It filled his head and he could rarely pick up anything more specific than this huge dread that something was about to tear them apart. He felt scared, anxious. Sometimes he'd had minor anxiety attacks on a calm walk to class that could only be explained by the feelings he was getting from what was obviously his clan. It was times like this that he had to duck into anywhere in the Christmas wing, pretending to be looking for Mint. And, in a way he was, but he'd be lying if he said he didn't want to also benefit from the good feelings that floor brought to his anxious mind.

Finally, he couldn't wait any longer.  His eyes flew open in the very middle of a cool, beautiful Spring night. He felt betrayed. These hours at night were the only ones he had without them. The only time he could let his mind focus on anything but his clan's emotions since he had Bridget nearby to lull him to sleep. She had started to notice though; she wasn't stupid. He did hide it remarkably well, but no one could hide that eternally.

He hated to disturb her, but he couldn't just leave without a word. Not to mention the fact that she was on top of him. He hated to go, but this time... This time, he got a word. One, single word that would speed his heart up what felt like a million beats a minute. The one word that no being could control. No cu sith, no leprechaun, not even the highest scholar of magic. Never had he only been able to concentrate so clearly and so strongly on one concept before. He didn't know if it had to do with his movement up the ladder of leadership or if the situation was really that dire, but it wasn't a word he could ignore anymore. Ringing out above all his other thoughts, like a mournful trumpet on a quiet morning was the word:

Death.

He couldn't wait any longer.

"Princess," he tried to say. The fear gripped his throat and all that came out was a slight wheeze. He cleared his throat, and more successfully, he said it one more time. "Princess." He was more successful on the second attempt, if you could call it that. The word had meaning, but his voice was dry and unfeeling; almost an insult to the word itself. He hoped she wouldn't take it too seriously.

Still partially asleep, Bridget shook her head as if saying 'No, sorry, I'm not waking up right now.' But she recognized that voice, and she knew he wouldn't wake her up for no good reason.

In a way, that almost made her want to keep her eyes closed even more so.

Reluctantly, the chocolate collie cracked one eye open, then another. She blinked the sleep from her eyes, and looked up at Red from her position on his chest.

"Wazza matter?" She mumbled sleepily, lifting her head slightly. If his expression was any indication, her desire to pretend she had still been asleep was correct. "Is everything alright?" She asked a little more clearly, raising some of her 'weight' off of him.

She had a feeling she already knew what it was. Well, not the exact details, per se, but she could piece it together. She knew bits and pieces here and there - Red's family, his clan. That strange ability he had to sense them before he even saw them. The way the corners of his eyes sometimes crinkled with worry in the past several weeks. That didn't make dealing with it any easier, especially when she had no idea how to help... if she even could.

She sat up next to his side in bed, busying herself with rubbing her eyes for the time being instead.

Red sat up, brow furrowing as he tried to form words that would make her understand its urgency, but not worry her terribly. He decided to start small.

"I... I hafta go home. Dunno fer how long." He stopped before looking over at her huge blue eyes. Big mistake. Why would he go home when he was happy here? Why should he go home? They didn't want him there.

Still... that word... He had to see if it was--... No. He wouldn't jump to conclusions. He'd just go look. Maybe it was nothing. No, he knew it was something, but hopefully it wasn't--...

"Might not be long. Could be though. 'M sorry," he said, voice growing quieter the longer he spoke. "So sorry..."

Bridget knew she had turned on the puppy dog eyes, but she couldn't help it. It was like an automatic switch, and no matter how hard she tried to shut it off, she just couldn't do it. At best, she could keep her ears from drooping too pitifully. At least she didn't have to try to make her tail wag, because she knew she definitely couldn't make that happen.

She knew he couldn't help it if he had to go leave, and go home. She knew that. It would be no different if she had to go home for some reason - she was sure he'd be just as unhappy as her if the tables were turned, if not more so. She didn't want to make him feel guilty.

... But then again, it was much less likely she would come home covered in bruises and aching.

And this was the first time he'd ever had to leave so suddenly... in the middle of the night...

She bit her lip, trying to just nod and accept it. But her neck didn't want to cooperate.

"Why? What's wrong?" She found herself insisting on this line of questioning instead, even though she wasn't entirely sure she wanted to hear the answer. Anything that involved waking up in the middle of the night and leaving when you sounded so miserable surely wasn't a good thing. But what did she want him to say?

'You're right, Bridget. Whatever it was that woke me up in the middle of the night and made me decided to tell you I had to leave actually WASN'T that important. Let's just go back to sleep.'
She couldn't even imagine it in his voice, because it was that ridiculous.

She dropped her eyes to her lap, where her fingers were winding themselves worriedly together. She wrung her hands and was tempted to shake her head to try to clear her head. Clear thoughts, clear thoughts. He wouldn't leave if it wasn't important. If he could tell you the details, he would, if he even knew them. He said he was sorry. He said it might not be long. It'll be okay. Just let him g--

"I don't understand why you have to leave." She burbled before she could stop herself, moving her hands to put one over her mouth and the other one over one of her ears, winding in her hair. "What's calling you away?"

Red sighed. He owed her some form of explanation, as reluctant as he was to give her one. He would probably insist on following her home if she woke up in the middle of the night feeling like she had to be there. And even if he didn't, she'd at least come home in one piece. He could never be 100% sure if he was actually going to come back when he left.

"M' pack. I dunno how ta explain it, but... Have ya ever had such a feelin' of dread-- like instinct-- that someone was or some people were in trouble? M' pack can communicate with me, but I usually can't hear 'em here... It's... been stronger lately and now..." He stopped himself from saying any word that suggested doom or death. "I jus' really need ta check in. Wit' mum sick and Keallach in charge..." He trailed off, hoping she'd understand. He had to think of a way to get her to let him leave. He had to go.

He had to lie.

"It's not a big deal, or it shouldn' be. I promise I'll be back-- and soon," he settled on, sounding much more confident than he actually was. He controlled his ears that so desperately wanted to go down, and pulled her to him, wrapping both arms around her tightly. He knew he was doing it too urgently. He hoped pretending to be so confident would result in real confidence and hopefully a bit of good luck.

He had to ask for forgiveness this time, not permission. He made a silent oath that he would never do it again.

Bridget listened intently, trying to keep her expression from looking much more unhappy than it was already showing. She gave a shallow nod, casting her eyes downwards.

She was about to open her mouth to say something again, when he pulled her into a hug instead, and her throat squeaked. She fumbled with her arms, almost unintentionally smacking him first before she remembered how her muscles worked and clung to him instead. Her eyes prickled and she pressed her forehead against his shoulder, whining quietly.

"You promise." She said into against his shoulder, not moving her face. "I'm going to hold you to that, okay? You promised." She felt herself getting his skin wet, and pulled back reluctantly and furiously began to wipe at her eyes with one hand. She slid the other one down his arm and clasped his hand, staring at the hold miserably.

"It doesn't have to be soon..." She whispered, barely daring to say it, "But you promised to come back." She raised her eyes to meet his. "Keep it."

He clenched his jaw and ran his fingers through her hair before planting a kiss on her forehead.

"I promise."

Red climbed out of bed and put a blanket over Bridget before pulling on his shirts, socks and shoes. He stood up and looked at her. She looked so small all alone in his bed.

"I'll be back as soon as I can, Princess."

Bridget laid limp on the bed, her fingers alternating between clenching and relaxing on the edge of the blanket pulled up to her chin. Her pink hair looked like a stain against the sheets.

She debated whether or not she should close her eyes and pretend to be more at ease than she really was, or leave them open and watch him go.

It seemed her mind had made itself up without informing her, as she numbly watched Red get dressed and bid her farewell.

She lifted up her fingers and wiggled them good-bye.

"Be safe, Sunshine."

Red tried not to furrow his brow as he turned and left the room, closing the door silently behind him and then taking off in a run down the hallway and down the stairs.

It would be a week before she saw or heard from him again.

Though she was far from happy about it, Bridget was a little used to this kind of thing. There would be times Red had to go, often without much explanation, but he'd always returned. She never looked forward to the times he'd leave, but at least she could do her best to reassure herself he'd always come back.

She managed to do just that for the first several days.

One of the mornings after the night Red had left, Bridget was impressed to find herself waking up. Though she wasn't incapable of sleeping without him - as was the case for Red without her - as time had worn on between them, she'd become used to his presence when she slept. It was like the way someone might become used to the constant drip of a leaking tap. Take it away, and it was suddenly much more difficult to sleep than it ever had been before. That is exactly how Bridget felt during these periods they were separated from each other. Sleep eluded her.

She was much less impressed with herself when she immediately followed waking up with having to rush and stumble into the bathroom, her stomach loudly protesting this upset in her usual sleep schedule. She hunched over the toilet and retched loudly, apologizing in her head for anyone who might be woken up by the noise.

Okay, maybe not exactly eating properly didn't help matters. But it was hard to keep your appetite up when you were worrying yourself into a hopeless wreak over the person you lov-- liked a lot. Liked too much to feel comfortable just using the word 'like'.

She flushed the toilet and stood back up on shaky legs, looking at herself in the mirror. She hadn't bothered to touch up her eyes or freckles the last two days, and it was starting to show. She pulled her bottom eyelids down and stared closer.

'A little grey around the edges... Oh well.' She grumbled and went back to her room.

She didn't bother touching up her colours for the next few more days Red still didn't return. When asked why she was suddenly wearing glasses, she just shrugged.

"Sometimes I have to, that's all!" She explained to a particularly needlesome elf's questions. "It's nothing to worry about..."

But even the chocolate collie knew, it was a lot easier to say it was nothing to worry about, than to actually feel that way.

She didn't go into class on the seventh day.

Ciocci walked down the hallway, her brows furrowed in concern. Bridget had not showed up to class today, and she'd been looking worse and worse. She seemed to be... fading, and it was scaring Cici. The sickening dread and depression she'd felt emanating off of her friend terrified her. Bridget used to be the one person she could go to when she was feeling down who would instantly turn her mood around. The collie girl was always so peppy that she was like a warm beam of sunshine falling through a window. But lately simply being around her gave Cici a sick feeling in her stomach.

She finally reached the collie's room and knocked gently on the door.

"Bridget?" she called softly, feeling her muscles growing weak and her stomach upset as the emotions began rolling over her. "Br-bridget?"

Behind the door, there wasn't a peep for several seconds, before finally, there was a great deal of shuffling. Another period of silence followed as the flood of unpleasant emotions oozed from directly behind the door, before the handle jiggled and turned.

Bridget held the door open a crack, just enough to see a pale blue eye between it and the frame.

"Yes?" She asked quietly, before opening up the door a tiny bit more when she saw it was her dear friend. "Oh, hey, Cici!"

She did her best to inject some pep into her voice, a small smile spreading across her face. Her cheeks were almost devoid of their usual freckles - they were so faded if you didn't know they were there, you might not have noticed the traces of spots at all.

"What's up?"

"You, you w-weren't at lunch today," Cici stuttered. She'd grown accustomed to sitting with the collie and her friends, and today she'd been alone for the first time in a long time. "A-and, I just noticed you, you haven't b-been very well lately, and I, I just w-wanted to see if there was any, anything I could, could do." She began fiddling with her hair halfway through her sentence, her eyes dropping to the floor and her voice trailing off until it was the barest whisper. She had never had to do this before for anyone before, and she was terribly afraid she was doing it wrong. That combined with the constant waves of emotions made her tremble, although she tried to control it.

"O-oh," Bridget stuttered, feeling a little caught. "I was just feeling a little sick today, so I stayed in. That's all!" She tried to wag her tail, but it only gave off a couple pitiful wags at half-mast before hanging back down and she felt like kicking herself in the leg.

"Really, you don't have to worry about me." She reached out with one hand and patted the cupid on the shoulder reassuringly. "I'll be fine! Everybody gets sick sometimes, right?"

Seeing Cici flinch at the contact when Bridget touched her, the collie belatedly remembered there was really nothing she could do or say to convince an empath she was in almost-perfect health. Quickly taking her hand back, she faked a cough into it and started backing into her room as she closed the door.

"Really, though, you might not want to get too close to me in case I'm contageous! Who knows what a chocolate bunny's cold will do in your system!" And with that, though she felt rude for doing it, Bridget closed the door in her best friend's face and retreated back to her bed.

Sitting on the edge of it with her feet hanging off, she stared at the floor with her blurry vision and sniffled.

"I can't do anything right..." She warbled, flopping onto her side and covering her face with her hands as she began to cry. She didn't even know what she meant by that, it's just how she felt. "Maybe I'm just too hormonal for my own good." She said to no one, letting off a watery laugh. She curled up on her side on her bed and hugged her legs, falling into an uneasy sleep even if her friend might still be right outside her door.

Cici stood, stupefied for a moment. Moments later she felt a tear roll down her cheek and gasped lightly, trying to blink away the water in her eyes. She turned quickly and began walking briskly through the halls, still trying to down the leftover lump in her throat.

She hurried down the the stairs to the Christmas floor. The warm fuzz of jolly good feelings helped take the edge off of her worry and leftover sadness. She went down to the end, slowly approaching the large wooden door. She knocked quietly, rapping her knuckles softly and calling,

"M-Mr. Kandi? M-Mr. Kandi-i... I, I n-need to, to talk to y-you..."

Cain leaned back in his chair, feeling a slight disruption in his cheerful floor. It wasn't anything that couldn't be explained by a normal wave of students walking around this time of day, but he knew better than to not be on alert anyway. As he mildly suspected, he heard a very small voice behind his door that he instantly recognized as Cici. A very upset one. He flicked in a couple directions, bringing a steaming mug of cocoa and a blanket to a very cushy chair that he manually moved to his desk. Standing behind the (now ready) chair, he pointed at the door which opened in before smiling kindly at his fellow empath.

"Hello, Miss Fiori. I trust something-- or someone, has upset you," he stated warmly as his eyebrows tilted upwards in a sympathetic manner. He gestured down at the chair, ready made for her. "Would you care to sit while you dismiss their feelings and find your own? A mug is ready for you."

Cici sat in the chair, taking the mug but leaving the blanket for now. She nursed the mug for a moment, gently sipping the thick, rich chocolate. She savored the hazelnut and cinnamon notes before speaking.

"It's, Bridget, sir. She's... something's w-wrong. R-red's been gone for a, a long time. And I think Bridget's not, not taking it well. I d-don't know what's going on with her, but sh-she's... fading? I don't know how t-to expl-lain it. Something's just very, very w-wrong." She looked down, staring into the rich brown mixture swirling in her cup. She stirred it with the provided peppermint stick. Originally the addition of the minty flavor had seemed strange, but it had grown on her until it was part of her favorite blend. She took another drink, appreciating how Mr. Kandi always provided her with exactly perfect chocolate, exactly the way she liked it.

Cain sighed. He did remember hearing from Aven that Mr. Montague hadn't been in class lately. "Would she allow me to speak to her, or?" He made a face as Cici's negative memories of the incident cropped up, channeling out negative emotion and continued before she could even answer. "I see."

He paused for a moment as he circled the desk and sat in his chair, turning to look out the window. Cain pressed his steepled fingers to his lips and said, after a moment, "How long has Mr. Montague been gone, do you think?" Remembering Aven considered this a problem more than once, he then asked, "And how long is he gone normally? Just a couple days or so, right?"

Cici thought. She didn't pay as much attention to Red as she did to Bridget. If she were honest, the large Irish cu sith intimidated her, even though he had never threatened her in the slightest. Still, she HAD noticed him being absent often.

"Y-yeah, that s-sounds right." she said, trying to think. "I g-guess I'd say it's b-been about a, a week now?" That seemed right. She remembered Bridget had seemed particularly upset that morning, and only gone downhill from there.

Cain nodded. "I can see why she would be worried," he remarked, trailing off. He was lost in thought for a while before getting another mug of cocoa for himself.

Smiling, he explained, "I'll tend to it after a small cup of cocoa. I find that chocolate helps to make everything a little bit better, don't you?"

In reality, he knew he'd need some emotional strength before going anywhere near whatever was going on in St. Patrick's Day town right now. It was obviously going to be an ordeal.

"In the meantime, would you mind telling me a bit about how you're doing? It's been quite the storm of emotions in these halls as of late."

------

After going to Aven and asking for anything she had to tell him about cu siths, he was quite scared of going to deliver anything, even a verbal message to any cu sith, but from what she said, he knew that Red, though still not exactly well-behaved for a student, was very well-behaved for a cu sith. Especially as of late. He had hope that things would be okay, but he also knew they might not be.

Cain arrived in St. Patrick's Day town as dusk was settling in on the quaint town on the hill across from him. He wished he was going there and not to the dark, dreary forest to his left. He wasn't about to let fear get the best of him, though, that wasn't something he did, so down the hill he trudged, through patches of clovers and dense fog. He was stopped by a very young cu sith as the forest grew nearer to him.

"'M sorry, sir, but I wouldn' recommend goin' in." She said, holding out an arm. It was clear she was much younger than him, but she could quite clearly hold her own. She looked younger than Red by a few years, but he would never have guessed she was as young as she was until he noticed her tail and ears were still disproportionate to her. She still had to grow into them. And yet, her eyes told stories of dark things she had seen, horror stories she had been in.

Cain smiled at her. "I'm sorry, my name is Cain Kandi, teacher at Holidays Academy. I'm just looking for Mr. Redmond Montague. If I could see him, I would leave very quickly." She didn't look like she was buying it, so he tried another approach. "What might your name be?"

"Nollaig," she said. "Nollaig Montague. 'M afraid I wouldn' recommend seein' my uncle righ' now, sir. 'S not good."

Cain furrowed his brow. "I see." He lingered awkwardly for a moment, refusing to accept defeat when so many students were affected.

"Miss Montague, could you deliver a message to Mr. Montague for me? It's very important."

Nollaig hesitated and bit her lip. She nodded.

"I need you to tell him that Bridget is very sick and he needs to tend to her as soon as possible."

Recognition spread across Nollaig's face, followed by fear. "Yes sir. I will, sir. Please go back to the Academy quickly. I'll take care o' it."

Without waiting for him to leave, she sprinted off through the forest, obviously familiar with her surroundings. Cain turned and headed back after lingering a moment.

--------

Red shouted out some orders to Nollaig, putting her in charge of her mother's funeral before he fled from his pack for Bridget. Keallach was on 24 hour surveillance by the toughest guys he knew, but his mother was in very bad shape. Rationalizing that he couldn't lose two people in one short stretch of time, he ran as fast as he could, which was fairly quickly, but to him it felt like he was taking a lifetime to return to the school. It was nearly dark. If he could return soon he could stay with her for a day or maybe even two, show her he was fine and then come back to finish the job.

He picked a four-leaf clover and tossed it when he got to the familiar circle of doors before dashing up the hill.

Cain breathed a sigh of relief as he saw bright green eyes moving quickly across the schoolyard through the window of his clocktower and watched as Red leapt up the steps, threw the door open (which Cain had unlocked seconds before) and dashed inside.

Red ran up the stairs to the second floor, almost sliding across the floor before he made it to the last door on the left.

Now that he was here, though, he was terrified of what might be lying on the other side of the door. Raising a shaking hand, he knocked twice. He didn't hear an answer or any movement. She must have been asleep. That sounded good, actually. Maybe he should just--... No. He opened the door carefully (also unlocked by Cain from his clocktower) and closed it behind him silently, creeping over to her bed.

He nearly cried at what he saw. Controlling his facial expression, but not quite controlling his ears which were starting to flatten against his head or his tail which was drooping now, he placed one large hand on her forehead carefully.

"Princess?"

Mumbling incoherently, Bridget tried to move her head for a second before realizing she wasn't just imagining the pressure against her forehead.

Blearily, she opened her eyes, and blinked several times. Though her vision was quite blurry from a combination of just waking up/lack of proper sleep, her illness, and her self-imposed lack of maintenance, she could recognize that familiar shapes and colours anywhere.

"Sunshine?" She croaked, feeling like she was in a daze. What if she was still dreaming? She reached up with one of the hands griping the edge of her blanket, and grabbed hold of his wrist instead.

'Solid.' She tightened a hold a tiny bit. 'Either he's real, or this is the most realistic fever dream I've ever had.'

Reluctantly, she left go of his wrist. She shoved the blankets she'd pulled up to her chin down slightly, raising up on her elbows.

"Are you real?" She decided to voice her thoughts aloud, even if she might just be talking to thin air that would tell her what she wanted to hear. "Or am I still dreaming?"

His brow furrowed as he sat down next to her gently and wrapped his arms around her.

"Princess, it's me. I'm real. I'm here." Red's voice cracked as tears filled his eyes. He was too stubborn to let them fall, but he knew she could feel the heat of his cheeks on her head.

Pouring every ounce of sincerity he could muster into each syllable, he whispered, "I'm so sorry," into her head. His tears betrayed him, falling one by one into her pink bubblegum hair. He couldn't force himself to say anything else. Instead, he shook silently, heaving sobs and falling apart when he should have been strong enough for the both of them instead.

He kicked himself over and over in his mind, but couldn't force himself to stop. When he got close to stopping he would remember all the things that had happened since he left and the pain he had obviously caused her to go through. How dare he put her through that. Who did he think he was? He had promised Jo he wouldn't hurt her and look what he did. Look what he put this precious, candy angel through. And Mint! Mint would probably just try to beat him up, but she must have been worried sick too.

How could he do that to them? What right did he have to ever go home again when they needed him? He could at least tell the truth instead of acting confident when he knew he was talking St. Patrick's pants. He knew he had to go home again soon, too and that made him more upset. If he didn't go back, his mother might die.

If that happened, he would. And then Bridget.

He clenched his jaw and held Bridget a little tighter. He hadn't noticed until that moment that Bridget was crying too.

How. Dare. He?!

Feeling like she was in a daze, Bridget clung to what she dare not consider just her imagination anymore and pressed her face into his chest, breathing in the familiar scent and feeling her eyes spilling over. She mumbled unintelligibly into his shirt as he apologized to her, feeling his own tears on the top of her head and wanting so badly to say something more coherent.

"S'okay." She managed at last, though her voice still wobbled unsteadily. "It's okay." She tried again, sounding a little better. "It's not your fault. Something came up, and you had to leave, right?" She reached up and put her hand on either side of his face, using her thumbs to clear the tears off his cheeks. "You didn't do anything wrong, Sunshine."

"I... I should've been more honest with you," he said finally, gaining control of his voice and his tear ducts. Pulling back, Red looked his precious border collie in the eyes. "I should have told you the full threat. I shouldn't have tried to spare your feelings with dishonesty. I knew what I was saying at the time. I know better."

He paused for a long time. Finally, he heaved a great sigh and asked, "Did you ever meet Ethne? Nollaig's mom? My sister-in-law?"

Feeling a sense of dread creeping over her, Bridget held onto Red's hands and rubbed her thumbs over his knuckles.

"Yes," She answered carefully, "I met her that time Mint and I followed you... She was really nice. Is she... okay?" She was scared to hear the answer, but based on everything that had happened, she had a very unpleasant guess as to what the reality of Ethne's condition might be...
